High School Sports Participation Up Again

Participation in high school sports increased for the 21st consecutive school year in 2009-10, eclipsing the 7.6 million mark for the first time. “It is a significant achievement for our member state associations that in these difficult economic times, student participation increased for the 21st consecutive year,” said NFHS Executive Director Bob Gardner. “This reinforces the values that high school sports provide as part of the education of our students. The NFHS actively promotes participation in, and support for, the programs throughout the nation.” The report shows a number of encouraging trends.

Ohio Association Looks to Take on More

The governing body for Ohio high-school athletics is so concerned about the physical, emotional and financial toll in youth sports that it offered last week to provide uniform regulation to protect hundreds of thousands of children involved in nonschool programs. But to take on such a massive responsibility, the Ohio High School Athletic Association will need more money, staff and power from Ohio lawmakers.
